A second-quarter run fueled the Shelbyville Golden Bears on Senior Night Saturday in a county clash with the Class A, No. 7 Morristown Yellow Jackets.
With Garrett Gym likely as full as its been all season, Shelbyville performed at a high level, especially in the second frame as the team completed an 18-7 run in the final five minutes of the first half.
After leading 25-21 after one quarter of play, the Golden Bears went into halftime up 46-31, taking the air out of the Yellow Jackets in a tough environment. SHS finished the second quarter shooting 8 of 13 from the field.
Senior guard Zach Kuhn led all scorers on a relatively balanced night with 21 points in the 74-60 win. Golden Bears’ senior guard Josh Williams was a blur in the open court and finished with 20 points, while junior forward Luke Asher had 17 points. Senior guard DJ Kramer added eights points, including two 3-pointers.
For Morristown, senior guards Logan Laster and Logan Theobald finished with 18 and 15 points respectively, while sophomore guard Kyle Crim had 14 points and junior forward Trevon Carlton had 13 points.
“We talked a lot about our ability to be physical and get out in transition,” said Shelbyville head coach Ryan Mack. “We did that in the second quarter and were able to maintain the lead the rest of the game.
“Morristown does a really good job offensively in transition and Laster is excellent with the ball, that is what I was concerned about. Anytime you can get a state champ to come and play at your place, it is going to be a fun and exciting game. I thought the crowd was excellent tonight.”
Laster hit a buzzer beater before the end of the first quarter, but the Yellow Jackets struggled midway through the period. MT head coach Scott McClelland called a timeout down 21-13 with 2:49 to play.
McClelland’s team responded in the first quarter but could not in the second en route to the loss. After halftime, the Golden Bears kept enough pressure on the visitors to earn the home win. SHS led 60-44 after the third quarter.
Kuhn recorded a double-double in his final home game, finishing with 11 rebounds. Asher had nine rebounds and Williams finished with seven.
“Luke did a nice job of grabbing rebounds and finishing around the basket,” Mack said. “But Zach really controlled the game from the opening tip and Josh was able to get to the rim.”
Theobald led Morristown with seven rebounds.
SHS (11-10) wraps up its regular season Thursday at Batesville. The Golden Bears will play Columbus North in the second game next Tuesday at the Columbus North Sectional.
The Yellow Jackets (17-4) play again today at home against Rising Sun. The two teams will meet again on the opening night of the Southwestern Sectional next Tuesday. MT finishes its regular season on Friday at home against Tri.
