Volleyball begins Aug. 17 in Shelby County with the Morristown Season Opening Tournament. Waldron and Morristown could meet in the tournament depending on how each does in division play. Here are some other games to watch this fall:
Morristown vs. Southwestern, Aug. 30
The Spartans beat the Yellow Jackets 3-0 at home last season. Southwestern won 25-11, 25-19, 25-13 but lost key pieces to its offense. Morristown, which also lost a talented senior class, will be out for revenge.
Shelbyville vs. New Castle, Sept. 10
Shelbyville head coach Andrew Fuller said the Hoosier Heritage Conference is, without a doubt, one of the best conferences in Indiana for volleyball. New Castle, among others, has held its own and won another state title in Class 3A last season. Last year, the team was ranked No. 4 in the state among all classes, according to MaxPreps. NC beat SHS 3-0 at home last season.
Waldron vs. Morristown, Sept. 19
If the teams do not play in the season opening tournament at Morristown, this will be the first battle between the Shelby Eastern foes. Last season, Morristown won 3-0 at home. The Yellow Jackets won 25-16, 25-18, 25-10 but will look different, personnel wise, this season.
Shelbyville vs. Yorktown, Sept. 21
The Tigers, ranked No. 1 in the state, were 34-0 last season en route to a state title in Class 4A. Yorktown beat SHS 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-12) last season but lost 2019 seniors Kenzie Knuckles and Tegan Seyring, who combined for over 700 kills.
Shelbyville vs. Triton Central, Sept. 23
Several of the same names from last season’s contest are back, which should make for an interesting county game. Last season, the Golden Bears won 3-1 at home. SHS won 25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19. TC has a chance to earn revenge at home.
Triton Central vs. Scecina, Oct. 1
Triton Central and Scecina have had competitive contests in various sports in recent seasons. Scecina was 6-1 in the Indiana Crossroads Conference last season. Triton Central finished 3-4. During the head-to-head meeting last season, Scecina won 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 25-15).
Triton Central vs. New Palestine, Oct. 3
New Palestine, playing in the HHC, has been strong the last several seasons. Last year, the Dragons beat the Tigers 3-0. Can the Tigers, who return several experienced players, come together for a tough road win?
Waldron vs. Southwestern, Oct. 4
Both teams lost important players at the net. Last season, the Spartans beat the Mohawks 3-0. SW won 25-16, 25-20, 25-14. Southwestern head coach Caleb Tennell and Waldron head coach Whitney Moore are cousins, which adds to the excitement for each program.
Shelby Co. Tournament, Oct. 12
Triton Central won the county tournament over Southwestern last season, 2-1 (29-30, 26-24, 15-13), in a highly-competitive championship match. This is a fun tournament to cover, mainly because the semifinals are short. Teams need to win just two sets to advance. If a team wants to move on to the title match, it can’t come out flat in its first game.
