Weekly Recap

Boys Basketball

The Boys Basketball Team hosted Delta on Friday after a snowy week that caused a cancelation on Tuesday with Columbus East.  The Golden Bears held an 11-10 lead after the first quarter.  Shelbyville pushed its lead to 24-19 at the half.  Delta pushed its way back into the game and with 3 minutes remaining the score was all tied up at 43.  The Golden Bears had the basketball coming out of a timeout with 5.6 seconds left with the score still tied at 43.  Shelbyville produced a driving shot by Hunter Hounshell that was off the mark to send the game into overtime.  The Bears were outscored 4-1 by Delta in the overtime bringing the final score to 47-44 in favor of Delta.  Shelbyville was led in scoring by Mitch Yeend with 14 points.  The Bears got 12 points from Matthew Bunton, 8 points from Oliver Sandman, and 7 points from Hunter Hounshell.  Jakob Heaton had 3 points to round out the scoring for the Golden Bears.  The varsity is now 5-12 on the year.  The JV Team defeated Delta and moved its record to 4-11 on the year.  Both Teams will host East Central on Saturday to close out the home portion of the 2020-2021 season.

The Boys Basketball Team hosted East Central on Saturday to end the home season for 2020-2021.  The Golden Bears trailed 15-14 after the first quarter, but took a two point lead into the half at 32-30.  The score stayed tight moving into the 4th quarter at 39-38 Shelbyville.  At the four minute mark of the 4th Shelbyville was hanging on to a 47-45 lead.  The Golden Bears produced some big stops on the defensive end and timely shooting to take a 51-47 lead with 1:47 remaining in the game.  The Golden Bears closed the door on East Central by taking care of the basketball and hitting free throws down the stretch to win 61-56.  The Bears were led in scoring by Mitch Yeend with 29 points.  Hunter Hounshell scored 15 points, Brock Pitman scored 6 points, Layton Stieneker, Matthew Bunton, and TJ Sherwood all scored 3 points, and Oliver Sandman scored 2 points to round out the scoring.  Shelbyville moved to 6-12 on the year.  The JV was defeated by East Central and moved to 4-12 on the year.  Both teams travel to Seymour on Tuesday with basketball starting at 6 pm.

Girls/Boys Swimming

The boys’ swim team competed at the New Palestine Sectionals on Friday and Saturday. The team finished in 8th place and combined for 4 Golden Bear Top Tens and 24 career personal records. Despite being down a total of 10 swims, because of swimmers having to miss, the boys combined to drop 55.33 seconds. This is the most in Coach Weiler’s coaching career, despite having the fewest swims in that same time. Every single boy had at least one career best, with most having two or more.

The meet started off on a very high note Friday. For the first time, the 200 Medley Relay opened the meet going 4 for 4 on career PRs. Lance File, Tyler Harker, Will Rife, and Michael Fox all dropped time. By their second swim Saturday afternoon (where 3 out of 4 dropped even more time) they would average just over 1.5 seconds dropped each.

Tyler Harker followed his Medley Relay performance with a very controlled and smart swim Friday evening finishing in 5th place with a season PR. Saturday afternoon was all business for him though. Dropping almost 6 seconds from the night before, 3 seconds off his time from last season, to finish second overall behind Greenfield’s very talented Samuel Logan. Tyler’s 1:47.92 is the second fastest time in school history.

In 200 Individual Medley, Tristin Maloney and Michael Fox both put up career PRs, but came up just a little short in qualifying for Saturday. Tristin finished 17th (.14 seconds out of 16th) with a time of 2:29.64. That is a drop of 7.34 seconds for Tristin. This built a mountain of confidence for Tristin going into his other swims on the day/weekend. Michael Fox finished 21s with a time of 2:37.45. That is a drop of 1.99 seconds for Michael.

In the 50 Freestyle we did not see drops, but we saw very good performances from all 3 swimmers. Will Rife would protect his 9th seed going into Saturday, but ultimately drop to 12th place after a rough start in Saturday’s consolation finals.

The 100 Butterfly was the highlight event of the weekend for the Golden Bears. All 3 swimmers combined to drop 12.16 seconds, an average improvement of 6.3%. Will Rife’s 56.72 (4th on the GB Top Ten) was enough to move him up 4 spots into fifth and his first finals swim of his young HS career. He would finish 6th on Saturday with another strong swim going 57.59 Tristin Maloney’s hard work and dedication to this event paid off big time with a drop of 3.47 seconds and a 19th place finish. Manuel Sesma Perez’s first swim of the day was a PR with a drop of 3.83 anda  21st place finish.

In the 100 Freestyle on Friday, Tyler Harke yet again set a pace to ensure a finals swim on Saturday, and once again he followed that paced swim with a lights out performance on Saturday. Finishing 4th with a time of 49.75 (3rd GB Top Ten).

The 200 Freestyle Relay followed the lead of the Medley and went 4 for 4 on the weekend, averaging a time drop just under a second. Tyler Harker led off the relay with a 22.56 (2nd GB Top Ten), and the rest of his relay followed that lead. Elijah von Worder managed a 1.2 second drop, Tristin Maloney following up his great individual swims dropped 1.66, and Will Rife finished off the relay with a drop of .15 seconds all leading to a very strong 5th place finish.

In the 100 Backstroke Lance File received his first individual Saturday swim at Sectionals with a 1:12.00 16th place finish. He would follow that PR up with another second drop on Saturday, bringing his total drop to 2.29 on the weekend. Elijah von Werder finished 19th. He also dropped 2.29 seconds.

The relays truly followed each other’s lead and set the tempo for the whole weekend. The 400 Freestyle Relay was swam in two different orders, so that Tristin Maloney and Manuel Sesma Perez could each have an opportunity at the coveted sub 1:00 100 Freestyle “flat-start” swim. On Friday Tristin was able to destroy that time with a lead off of 56.16 (over a five second drop). While Manuel did not quite break that barrier he was able to drop over 2 seconds and come very close to it. Lance File added another second of dropped time in his split.

Great job to all of the boys on a great meet and also a great season. The line up we were able to take to Sectionals will return entirely, except for one, so this meet was a great preview to what we will see next year and for a few seasons to come.
