The Golden Bears welcomed conference foe New Palestine to town on Tuesday night to open up the newly formatted baseball conference schedule. The HHC baseball teams will now play a home and home series on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s with Thursday’s used as a rainout date. The Bears defeated the Dragons 10-3 to move to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Benny Thompson recovered quickly from a solo leadoff home run by Carter Stogsdill, to pitch a complete game giving up four hits and three runs, while striking out 12 and only walking one. The Golden Bears made quick work of New Palestine’s starter Maddox Manes as he only made it through one and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out one. Spark plug Brayden Basey hit his first home run of the year in the second inning, and Charlie Rife’s sixth inning home run added insurance runs for the Golden Bears. In all the Golden Bears totaled eight hits, with Thompson helping his cause with multiple hits. Rife ended the night three for three at the plate. The Bears will travel to New Palestine tonight for the second game in the series with baseball starting at 5:30 pm.
