Shelbyville’s season opener was an away contest against a tough Franklin Community side. The Bears started shaky, going down 2-0 in the first 20 minutes of the contest, but showed great determination to battle back. Cory Taylor scored the first goal of the season directly from a free kick. Early in the second half, Oscar Hernandez made several Grizzly Cub defenders get turned around during a wonderful solo run that ended with a shot from close range that beat the keeper. After giving up a third goal, Shelbyville took control of the game, having several more quality attempts in the final 20 minutes. Outside backs Carson Blair and Brayden Basey even found themselves making runs into the box with a chance to equalize. The tying goal finally came when Hernandez played Alex Gil through on goal. Gil finished under pressure with a shot to the top shelf. For a moment, it appeared Taylor had scored the winning goal for the Bears, but the Franklin keeper made a fantastic diving save to keep the game level. While pressing to find a winner, Shelbyville was caught on a counterattack with less than 3 minutes to play.
