Senior Night. Bell Game. Conference championship on the line against rival No. 15 Greenfield. The stage couldn’t have been better set by Hollywood. Shelbyville settled into the game well, controlling the emotions of the pregame senior ceremony. They controlled possession more so than recent years against the Cougars. The defense was up to the test against a potent Greenfield attack, led by state leading scorer Zach Bell. Carson Blair was matched up with Bell for most of the game, and did well to limit his influence. Midway through the first half, a deflected ball ended up in the perfect position for Greenfield to bury a wonderful shot from 25-30 yards out. The Golden Bears regrouped and weren’t rattled by the deficit.
In the second half, Alex Gil had several opportunities to get behind the defense. Gil, Cory Taylor, and Eddie Carrizalez tested the Cougar keeper, but were unable to find the breakthrough. Even as Shelbyville pushed to get a goal back, the defense remained solid and didn’t allow Greenfield to expand its lead. Cameron Baker, Jackson Browning, Oscar Hernandez, and Evan Witte put in a full 80 minutes of work to help keep the game within reach.
