Shelbyville remained undefeated in conference play with a victory over New Castle. Coming to the end of grueling stretch in the schedule, the Golden Bears struggled for energy and innovation at times. They controlled possession for much of the first half with great ball movement from Oscar Hernandez and Evan Witte. The final pass in the attacking third just couldn’t break down the New Castle defense. With less than 5 minutes before the break, Alex Gil got by his defender on the outside and slipped a pass to Nolan Parker in the middle of the box. Parker was able to send his shot into the top corner to give Shelbyville the lead.
The second half proved to be more back and forth, with the Bears’ defense holding strong. Gil made a solo run through the middle and went for placement over power just outside the box. His shot snuck inside the post, just out of reach for the Trojan keeper. Shelbyville’s shutout streak came to an end when New Castle found a man free on a counterattack who was able to place his shot into the side net.
The Golden Bears will have a chance to claim a conference championship with a win over Greenfield on Senior Night next Monday.
