In a clash of two teams with HHC title aspirations, Shelbyville made a statement with a 3-0 win over Mt Vernon. The Marauders controlled most of the first 10 minutes, but Shelbyville still led 1-0 after Oscar Hernandez found Cory Taylor with a well-weighted through ball. Taylor found the far post to give the Bears the lead against the run of play. The goal seemed to settle the Golden Bears down and they were able to gain control of the midfield. Brock Pitman played extremely well in the 6 position, stopping any Marauder attack before it got to the back line. On the ball, Pitman consistently found Hernandez and Evan Witte who were able to hold possession for much of the first half.
The senior leaders took control of the half time talk, expressing the need to improve the play in the second half. In the same fixture last year, Mt Vernon posted a furious second half rally to defeat the Bears. This year’s squad was determined not to experience deja vu. As expected, Mt Vernon pushed hard to start the second half. They managed to get a shot past keeper Kaleb Schaf, but senior captain Jackson Browning covered Schaf and cleared the ball off the line. That save turned the momentum, and Shelbyville started to find Alex Gil in space on the sideline. Gil beat the defense and slipped a ball to Nolan Parker at the back post. Taylor added a second goal on the night with a few minutes remaining to seal the victory. Shelbyville completed their 5th consecutive shutout, and moved to 4-0 in the HHC.
