Shelbyville entered sectional play as the second best HHC team during the regular season. Their opening opponent (Greenfield) just happened to be the HHC champions this year, as well as the number 12 team in the state. For this group of seniors, Tuesday’s contest was the 8th meeting against Greenfield in their careers, so the teams were extremely familiar with one another. After a back and forth first 20 minutes that saw Cory Taylor put constant pressure on the Cougar back line, Greenfield was able to open the scoring. They played a cross into a dangerous area, and when GK Kaleb Schaf was unable to corral the ball, Greenfield found themselves with an open net. The Golden Bears regrouped and finished the half strong with opportunities being created for Alex Gil. Unable to find the back of the net, the score was 1-0 heading into halftime.
To start the second half, Shelbyville turned up the pressure. Evan Witte was unlucky not to draw a penalty when he rose for a header inside the box but was undercut by a Cougar defender. Moments later, Greenfield would score their second after a Shelbyville defender was also undercut trying to head the ball clear. The missed header lead to another open shot for Greenfield at the back post that was able to beat Schaf. Greenfield added a third late on to put the game away. The Golden Bears played extremely hard throughout and had an amazing season, despite the outcome.
