The Dennis McNulty Invitational got off to a chaotic start as teams arrived to tornado sirens blaring, triggering a 75-minute delay. Once the weather cleared, the Bears delivered several notable results against an extremely competitive field of opponents. Sonora O'Connor led the way in the 300m hurdles, claiming 3rd place with a time of 46.94. Jordyn Noe also placed in two separate events, taking 4th place in high jump with a mark of 4' 10" and 5th in the 100m hurdles at 16.47. In the relays, the 4x400m team of Alyna Castanon, Jordyn Noe, Sonora O'Connor, and Macey Robbins combined for a 5th-place finish in 4:13.34. Macey Robbins added a 6th-place finish in the 800m run, crossing the line in 2:26.05. On the boys side, Ethan Griffin earned a 6th-place spot in discus with a throw of 131' 0", while Dalton Helton had a massive, 12-foot personal best to take 8th place with a mark of 130' 0". Noah Jones added to the scoring by clearing 10' 0" in pole vault to secure 7th place. Shia Veach was the lone Bear competing amongst the most elite distance runners in all of Indiana and the surrounding states at the Carmel Distance Showcase. In what was a tactically brilliant performance, Shia was rewarded with a new personal best time by 10 seconds, finishing 6th in his heat in 9:38.06. It is likely the fastest 3200m time from a Shelbyville athlete in over 20 years, dating all the way back to Sean Hudson's school record time from 2004 (9:17.39). Up next is a triangular hosted by Columbus North and including East Central on Tuesday, April 28th. Photos attached are of Shia Veach and Coach Whitney Campbell, provided by Whitney Campbell.
