GIRLS: The Shelbyville girls track and field team competed against a deep field at the Mt. Vernon HHC championship meet, led by several standout performances in the hurdles and field events. Sonora O’Connor provided the individual highlight of the night, dominating the field and winning the conference title in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.71. She also took fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.60 and finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 16' 8.25". Jordyn Noe also had a productive evening across multiple events, finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.44 and third in the high jump by clearing 4' 10". In the 800-meter run, Macey Robbins crossed the line in 2:25.03 to earn a fifth-place finish. Both the 4x800-meter relay (America Leon-Torres, Alyna Castanon, Aerin Garcia-Santiago, Macey Robbins - 10:34.74) and the 4x100-meter relay (Mary O'Connor, Diana Gasca, Wura Ogunmoyela, Amara Lewis - 51.57) teams finished in fourth place, while the 4x400-meter relay (Jordyn Noe, Alyna Castanon, Mary O'Connor, Amlan N'taye) ended the night with a sixth-place performance. Up next is the Girls Sectional 20 hosted by Franklin Community on Tuesday, May 19th. BOYS: Following the girls' competition, the Shelbyville boys had their turn at the HHC championship meet on Thursday night. Ethan Griffin led the efforts in the field events, securing fourth place in the shot put with a toss of 43' 3.5" and adding a seventh-place finish in the discus with a mark of 132' 6". On the track, Eli Davis earned fifth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.47 and also finished seventh in the high jump, clearing 5' 8". Joaquin Delgado had a strong night in the hurdles, crossing the line in 16.29 to take fifth place in the 110-meter hurdles and returning to finish sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.34.' It was the final Hoosier Heritage Conference meet for the Bears as they will be moving to the Hoosier Legends Conference beginning next season. Former coach and Shelbyville Golden Bear Patrick Ellis's conference record of 23' 2.5" in the long jump remains intact as the Bears depart the HHC. Patrick passed away in February of this year. Up next is the Boys Sectional 20 hosted by Whiteland on Thursday, May 21st.
