Historic season cemented. The Lady Bears took to the track at Ben Davis High School on May 26th for the IHSAA Girls Regional 5 Meet. The field featured some of the best teams in the state, including 3rd-ranked Brownsburg, 6th-ranked Whiteland, 14th-ranked Avon, 15th-ranked Franklin Community, and 17th-ranked Pike. By the time the dust settled, the Bears finished tied for 15th place out of the 48 schools in the region. Each of the relays took full advantage of their opportunity, beginning with the 4x800 relay. America Leon-Torres, Alyna Castanon, Aerin Garcia-Santiago, and Macey Robbins raced around the track in a new season-best time of 10:13.40, placing 8th overall. It was a 3-second improvement from their previous season-best and a whopping 11 seconds better than their time at last week's sectional meet. The 4x100 relay of Mary O'Connor, Diana Gasca, Wura Ogunmoyela, and Amara Lewis shattered their previous best of 51.57 by running 50.47 and taking 11th place. Their time is now the fastest 4x100 time in Coach Blakey's twelve year tenure, surpassing the previous mark of 50.93 set by Anna Lux, Makayla Terrell, Megan Eads, and ZaLeeya Martin back in 2018. Not to be outdone by the previous two relays, the 4x400 relay of Macey Robbins, Alyna Castanon, Jordyn Noe, and Sonora O'Connor dug deep to find another gear and, in doing so, broke a 43 year-old school record. Their finishing time of 4:06.77 bettered the previous mark of 4:06.90 set all the way back in 1983. That record would actually be the second of the evening to fall as Sonora O'Connor raced to a second place and automatic state qualifying finish in the 300 meter hurdles. Her time of 45.57 beats former 100 meter hurdle state champion Sarah Snapp's mark of 46.01 from 2008. Sonora would also take 5th place in the 100 meter hurdle final with her second-best career mark of 15.44. Additionally, Jordyn Noe took 12th in the 100 meter hurdles (16.25) and Macey Robbins took 10th in the 800 meter run (2:26.86). Sonora will compete in the 300 meter hurdles at the IHSAA State Meet hosted by North Central High School on Friday, June 5th. Her event is scheduled to begin at 7:20 pm. Photos taken by Nick Blakey
